The apricot is the fruit of the apricot tree (Prunus armeniaca), belongs to the Rosaceae family and the genus prunus, which also includes cherry, plum, almond, peach.
Some of these have been used to produce various hybrids that are highly appreciated in the markets where they have been introduced.
Origin and subsequent spread
The apricot tree is a plant native to the northeastern part of China bordering Russia. Its presence dates back more than 5000 years. From there it slowly extended westward through Central Asia until it reached Armenia (from which it took its name, even today in Liguria they are called "armugnin", in Piedmont "armugnàc o armugnan", in Lombardy "mugnàc" and in Veneto, Trentino and Friuli "armełin") where, it is said, it was discovered by Alexander the Great
The Romans introduced it to Italy and Greece in 70-60 BC, but its spread in the Mediterranean basin was consolidated by the Arabs: indeed "apricot" derives from the meeting between the Latin word praecoquum (early) with the Arabic word al-barqūq.
The apricot would grow wild in nature in China for as long as 4,000 years. Today it is widespread in over 60 countries and is cultivated in hot or temperate and relatively dry climates.
