essent was born from a fundamental consideration of the function and materials of wall clocks. Clocks use both the duodecimal system for indicating hours and the sexagesimal system for indicating minutes and seconds. However, most wall clocks only display numbers from 1 to 12 to indicate the hours. Therefore, we aimed to design a standard wall clock that displays each number in a natural and easy-to-understand way. essent not only uses two types of numbers, but also two different colors to clearly differentiate between them. The hour hand indicates the hours, the numbers from 1 to 12, the minute and second hands indicate the minutes and seconds, and the numbers from 0 to 55. Linking each color allows for a more intuitive understanding of time. We also created an original typeface with a clean impression and high legibility. essent is also particular about materials. Focusing on the "printing" on the dial, we were inspired by the techniques and expression of letterpress printing, the origin of printing. We used thick paper for the dial, adding two types of foil stamping and debossing. This gives it a rich depth and expression never before seen before. Born from a fundamental focus on function and materials, essent is easy to read for both children and adults and blends seamlessly into any space.
