Woody Joe 1/150 Kumamoto Castle Wooden Model Assembly Kit
Completed in 1607 (Keicho 12) by Kato Kiyomasa over seven years, this castle is one of Japan's three great castles.
The main keep, which appears to be five stories, is actually three stories, six floors, and one basement. The second and fourth floors are actually eaves, not roofs.
The smaller keep is three stories, four floors, and one basement.
The castle features plaster walls and black clapboard lacquered with persimmon tannins. The ironclad fortress Kiyomasa built is evident everywhere, including the stone-drop guardrails jutting out from the keep base, the iron skewers known as "shinobi-gaeshi" on the smaller keep, and the high stone walls known as "musha-gaeshi" and "mikazuki-ishigaki" (crescent-shaped stone walls) that slope gently upwards.
The current keep is made of reinforced concrete and was rebuilt in 1960 (Showa 30), the 350th anniversary of the castle's construction, with donations from Kumamoto City.
Also known as "Ginkgo Castle," the large ginkgo tree, said to have been planted by Kiyomasa, shines golden in autumn.
