Also known as the Buddha of Infinite Life for his infinite lifespan, Amida Nyorai is the head of the Western Pure Land, where he continues to save people with his boundless life and wisdom. He is the most popular Buddha. "Namu Amida Butsu" means "I take refuge in Amida Nyorai." This generous Buddha will take anyone, no matter how bad they have done, to the Pure Land after death if they simply chant "Namu Amida Butsu." The act of welcoming the deceased is called "raigo," and Amida Nyorai, accompanied by Kannon Bodhisattva and Seishi Bodhisattva as attendants, arrives from across the mountains accompanied by lively music. He is a kind-hearted Buddha who warmly embraces and eases even the image of death, something we fear.
