Born in Brooklyn, Shuls attended the prestigious Cooper Union fine arts university, where his classmates included Larry Fink. He then studied under the female educator and photographer Lisette Model at the New School for Social Research (The New School). He is one of New York's leading photographers, having held exhibitions at many famous museum galleries in Japan and many of his works selected for permanent collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MoMA). He continues to work on editorials for various magazines and album covers for artists such as Green Day and Rod Stewart, and has published five photo books to date. His representative work is "Invisible City (1988)," set in the Lower East Side in the 1980s.
