"Amatsuru" is an honorific form of "soradeteru" (terrace in the sky), meaning to rule over the world. She is the supreme deity in Japanese mythology, a female deity symbolizing the sun. She is the ancestor of the Yamato Imperial Court, and is considered to be the ancestor of the Imperial family. Her name is Amaterasu Omikami in the "Nihon Shoki" and Amaterasu Omikami in the "Kojiki". After being enshrined at Ise Grand Shrine, she was also called Shinmei. The Shinmei Shrines and Shinmeisha Shrines in various regions are branch shrines.
