It is the deity for the 33rd anniversary of the death of the last of the Thirteen Buddhas, and is the guardian deity for those born in the years of the Ox or Tiger. "Kokuzo" refers to the vast treasure trove of wisdom that spreads throughout the universe. Kokuzo Bosatsu is a Buddha with the power to save all people who are troubled with his merit as great as the universe. He shows his right palm, expressing his mercy to listen to people's wishes, and in his left hand he holds a wish-granting jewel so that people's wishes will come true. He generously bestows upon us the wisdom, memory, and knowledge that he has taken from his storehouse, which is infinite and vast like the "void." It is said that one can gain infinite memory and the wisdom of Buddha, and the origin of the words "memorize by heart" and "remember by heart" comes from the "sky" in the name of Kokuzo Bosatsu.
