Traditionally, "Tango" referred to the first day of the month, which was the day of the horse, but since the custom of celebrating festivals on days with the same number on odd-numbered months, at some point it came to be limited to May 5th. This day was designated as a national holiday, Children's Day, in 1948. While the custom of taking iris baths to ward off evil spirits remains, the custom of displaying May dolls (May dolls) and celebrating the growth of boys has been passed down to the present day as a uniquely Japanese Tango Festival event.
