The third city we visit on our mystical Italian journey is Baia, near Naples in southern Italy. It was a hot spring resort town with villas for Roman aristocrats and emperors, but was gradually submerged and disappeared due to tectonic shifts. It was discovered by chance in the 1920s and is still under investigation, but some of the original mansions, baths, statues, mosaics, and frescoes remain as they were in the underwater park. The only way to see the ruins, sometimes called the Italian Atlantis, is by scuba diving or a special glass-bottom boat with a transparent bottom.
