NHK's "Ukiyo-e EDO-LIFE" is a groundbreaking five-minute program that interprets ukiyo-e as a medium conveying the lives of Edo commoners. Its catchphrase is, "A close look at ukiyo-e will reveal the surprising lifestyles of Edoites." This book is a visual reader based on the "Special Edition: Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" (broadcast December 29, 2018), a series born from this series, and compiles it with a wealth of new information. Starting from Nihonbashi and passing through the fifty-three stations to Sanjo-Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto, the main text focuses on the emotions of the people depicted in the ukiyo-e's details. Thirteen of the 55 prints in total focus on the characters in each print, featuring original stories featuring them as protagonists: "Stories Expanding from Ukiyo-e.
